“What you gain is not on display”
Zoë Mc Pherson’s newest album, Upside Down, intends to flip you sideways and backward – challenging orientations familiar to the contemporary body. Released today, the project holds a mirror up to listeners and unflinchingly reflects the current sociocultural landscape of the world. The reflection is upright and as resolute as Pherson on the cover, a verdant and bright beacon of hope, but, the reality reflected is mangled, simply upside down. The album is a staggering embodiment of radical accelerationist ideas; the first track at a snug 200 beats per minute features Pherson’s voice blending into the grainy distortion intertwined with the constant bass resonating throughout the sound arena. An electronic call to action, a declaration to dance fast and act fast.
Broken beats in high-frequency – sounds bounce within the skull and submerge the brain into a soundscape that places the individual in front of an open window with a view of a metropolitan city on the loose. Cars, LED lights, Neon signs, pairs of feet that can’t help but step on others rushing along the street, as biochemically connected as molecules of water.
