This Is The Truth: The Black Queer Masculine Through a Reclaimed Lens – A Prelude
Lyle Ashton Harris, untitled (Lyle and Robert, Bronx, New York, circa mid 1980’s), 2022
Opening at Melkweg EXPO on Friday, July 5th, This Is The Truth: The Black Queer Masculine Through a Reclaimed Lens – A Prelude invites us to acknowledge and celebrate the rich and dynamic reality of Black queer existence. With the works of Clifford Prince King, Lyle Ashton Harris, Marvel Harris, Stephen Isaac-Wilson en Ajamu X, and D’Angelo Lovell Williams, this incredibly intimate exhibition offers a contemporary portrait of Black queer masculinity—one that is deeply personal to the featured artists. Think of Dutch photographer Marvel Harris, whose personal photographic work reflects their lived experience as an autistic, transgender individual who identifies as genderqueer. Each artist’s unique perspective compels the audience to immerse themselves in their personal and collective identities, breaking free from conventional narratives and expressing a need for authentic self-expression.
Needless to say, This Is The Truth is definitely a must-see, as it calls for a greater understanding of the complexity and versatility of Black queer identities—a way to honour the resilience of a community all too often marginalised.
See you there!
