Re-framing the fashion narrative with JENNESKENS
Fashion week: a period in which clothing is historicised and creativity is encouraged. The event, spanning between a multitude of cities and seasons is infamous for its grandiosity, chaos and quite often, exclusivity. However, what if this were to change? This is the concept SIDESTEP is challenging. Their latest campaign, SIDESTEP Fashion Moments: The Next Step, re-frames the fashion-week formula, shining a light on emerging brands, making the extravaganza wholeheartedly more approachable whilst maintaining the same level of creativity. The style-led sneaker retailers have their eyes marked on a future of sustainability and inclusivity, so, adhering to their mission, have reached out to three upcoming designers – from different cities – to investigate their vision, who they are as creators, their process and, of course, their must-see shoe pairings…
Going for gold, for this year’s first collaboration, the streetwear connoisseurs are pairing up with Amsterdam-based designer Kimberley Jenneskens, taking the stage with her “Lost Property” collection. Perfectly synchronised with SIDESTEP, JENNESKENS designs with only the future in mind; genderless, fluid, creative, versatile and sustainable. Incorporating the classically ‘clean’ aesthetic of Dutch streetwear, the theme of this ~limited-edition~ collab with SIDESTEP STUDIO is aptly named, “Volume 1: Lost Property”. Showering us with dual-everything (yes, your pastel blue, brown and beige fantasy has been fulfilled), there is a canvas motif present within the unisex blouse, trousers and boxy jacket. Alongside this triple threat, JENNESKENS X SIDESTEP STUDIO is also releasing a shirt made of recycled polyester. This habitual cacophony is, for Jenneskens, a diffusion of the environments, where urban design and green technology are intersected. And in the words of the woman herself, “if everything around you is eliminated, what do you have left?”
Speaking on the collaboration, SIDESTEP’s Amandine Bigaret (SMD) reflects, “We love Kim Jenneskens’ approach to design and the way she creates with the future in mind – mixing function, versatility and durability. Supporting creative talent and giving them a platform is important to SIDESTEP and we can’t wait to share Kimberley’s journey with our community”. Now, this wouldn’t be an iconic SIDESTEP collab without a shoe pairing. And they did NOT disappoint, putting forward the Nike Zoom Air Fire. This historical trainer pays tribute to the performance of running with a padded, low-cut collar and foam midsole. Moulding seamlessly with the soft colours of the collection this is a ready-made look, yearning for your utilization.
