Stedelijk Museum Schiedam welcomes NEW WAVE

Illuminating global narratives and amplifying Future Voices In Art

Nifemi Marcus-Bello

It’s no secret that Western-centric perspectives have been dominating the art world for way too long, and curating international talent that broadens the conversation is as important as ever. Luckily, Stedelijk Museum Schiedam and art platform DAR Cultural Agency are bringing exactly that – a much-needed disruption of one-dimensional and narrow viewpoints for its group exhibition NEW WAVE.Future Voices in Art. Through November 3rd, the Schiedam space will be filled with floor-to-ceiling installations by six different artists, whose work is as expansive in its physical form as in its conceptual meaning.

Curated by Zineb Seghrouchni – the founder of DAR – the intention of the exhibition is to illuminate global narratives and break down the traditionally accepted division between ‘high’ and ‘low’ culture. The show highlights art that starts from the everyday, and reflects on collective experiences and personal histories that transcend cultural and geographic boundaries – by artists from Nairobi to Lagos to Rotterdam. NEW WAVE is a must-see for everyone who is ready to dive into a refreshing and multi-perspective definition of contemporary art.
