“I love bringing the circus to the function”
Bringing the energy for this Friday’s Glamcult Selects x NO-GA pre-party is none other than the bubbly TiZi – who is sure to take you on a playful and colourful journey! TiZi’s unique sound takes inspiration from jazz, house, R&B, batida, tarraxo, reggaeton, trap, and then some, building a world where your only instinct is to dance, dance, dance. The essence of their DJ sets lies in understanding how music provokes the body to move, seeing colors in sounds and how it all intertwines. Keeping a consistent bounce all through the night, they love a good wonky melody and sexy rhythms (so do we!!). By embodying the “abundance” state of mind TiZi shares more on the process behind creating their unique sound collage and how important it is to keep your chosen family by your side<3
So let loose and let’s dive into the euphoric & melodic world of TiZi!
Hi TiZi! How are you?
I’m good! I’m swag! How about yourself?
I’m excellent thank you! Let’s get into it! Your musical style blends everything from jazz to baile funk – what drew you to such a diverse mix, and how does this sound collage come together for you?
Well, I grew up with jazz, bossa nova & house ( & more). My dad used to play the album Labfunk by Atjazz, kinda as a bedtime story & my grandmother always played Joao Gilberto records when she was cleaning or cooking. That really built the foundation for my music taste and what interests me, soundwise. As for sound collages, I do more jazzy, ambient ones, then also more club shit with funk & batida. House can bring those together sometimes. It’s vibes. It’s certain colors that go well together.
Speaking of colors, I read in one of your bios that you see colours in music and movement- when did you first notice you could see music this way?
I was speaking to a homie, Finn and he told me about synesthesia & its many forms. I started noticing when I make playlists /pre-selections for when I’m DJ’ing. Vibes have a certain color which makes it so I can memorise songs better— comes in handy for a DJ haha. I also hear sounds in movement & I noticed that while watching people dance on Instagram reels without the sound.
That’s sounds super cool! What would you say lights up your creative spark these days? Is it a specific place, person, or maybe just a feeling?
I think my friends more than anything. They help me step into my power and believe in myself and love myself. They made me discover my worth so I would feel confident enough to play and share what I care about. Seeing other people be creative makes me want to create. The circus is also a big theme in my life. Clowns especially, I love dressing up as one, I love bringing the circus to the function! This Halloween I played for KRUISPUNT & Pacific Ondergronds and b2b with Dr Boo from the collective Fuuture Jazz with Kala as MC. We took over the small room and truly brought the circus. Fav gig so far.
You’ve started to answer this but what’s been your favourite dance floor moment so far? You know, one of those magical times where everything just clicked?
At the end of August I played for Feverdream x The Platform and Derozan played. We started outside, but as the weather started to shift all the gear needed to be moved to inside. He still played while the table with all the gear and the speakers were being moved! He was playing music from Principe discos and mixed into obscure cumbia and I was reminded of how much I love dancing and music, so corny but I loved it.
Dream b2b if you could pick absolutely anyone?
Sorry for not answering this question correctly but I can’t choose so it would be an endless b2b2b2b2b with Derozan, Rozaly, Oishī, Giaderza, Fuuture Jazz, Akira, Thom+, Mynrgy, Iced Lattina, Baby Ganoush, geneevre, Lulu, Barely legal, Chantal Dansen, Bird guy, corecore, nidia, theo parrish and yaeji. Where no one is allowed to to play from their own USB and also it’s my 30th birthday probably.
That is a lot of people haha, so many familiar names too, that have played Glamcult Selects so I’d say the Amsterdam scene is pretty special – what’s your take on it?
Well, I love nightlife. I see a lot of beautiful people with beautiful intentions. Within my own little curated bubble at least. I’m not sure what happens outside of that to be honest. I love places like Garage Noord, I’m now sad kanaal40 closed. I also love that I have different friends doing different things in different venues which keeps my life quite dynamic. However, I need more baile funk!
Omg! I totally agree! For all the bedroom DJs out there dreaming of sharing their sound – any words of wisdom?
Buy your own gear. Invest in what you want to do. Be daring and make mistakes! Surround yourself with a nice chosen family who supports you and sees you. Oh and always buy stuff on Bandcamp on a Friday.
One last question, are you manifesting anything at the moment?
Abundance. Always. That the world is actively healing. And for me to be able to support everyone I love. Periodt.
Period. Can’t wait to see you on Friday<3
