Marni’s sun rises under the Manhattan Bridge and makes us even more sad to part with summer
Marni’s NYC debut was a whirlwind of fiery colours, bold silhouettes and all things mismatched and DIY – without compromising the brand’s inherent elegance (of course). Francesco Risso, the man behind Marni’s creative genius, never ceases to impress us and always stays loyal to his vision of challenging the status quo. Risso invites his audience (including a tightly packed front row with Doja Cat, Kendal Jenner and Anna Wintour) to an obscure tunnel under the Manhattan Bridge. Sitting them down on stools of varying heights along a cobblestone catwalk, on goes the smoke machine and so begins the show. Hint hint: this is where the magic happens. From pasty cut outs and circular shapes, to mohair and wide brushstrokes, Marni waves goodbye to streetwear stereotypes and run-of-the-mill motifs. Did we also mention that the whole show was accompanied by a dramatic composition performed by the Brooklyn Orchestra and Dev Hynes? ‘Every sunset is also a sunrise’ – Risso pays homage to the Sun as an eternal inspiration, creating a perfect collection for the new generation fighting for the planet and looking for hope.
