Masquerade, Makeup & Ensor
As autumn settles in with its foggy days and muted landscapes, vibrant colours may seem to fade—but not at MoMu! The museum’s new exhibition, Masquerade, Makeup & Ensor, which opened just a few days ago, promises to be the most colourful experience of Autumn 2024. Amid the frenzy of fashion month, we escaped to Antwerp to explore the magical display celebrating the unsung heroes of fashion—makeup and hair artists. Only recently have these creative geniuses started receiving the recognition they deserve, with moments like John Galliano‘s iconic Margiela comeback, made unforgettable by Pat McGrath‘s artistry.
This exhibition finally shines a spotlight on these masters of transformation, quite literally “making up” for lost time. The work of Belgian painter James Ensor sets the tone of the exhibition. A true observer of human nature, Ensor used his pastel surrealist art to uncover the insecurities and insincerities of the bourgeoisie, raising a question that echoes throughout the exhibit: How do we navigate ideals of beauty?
Masquerade, Makeup & Ensor is both visually stunning and deeply relevant, addressing key issues related to womanhood and, most importantly, identity. It masterfully blends a variety of media to bridge the past, present, and future of beauty and makeup. Some of our favourites include works by Inge Grognard, Julien d’Ys masterpieces, and Genieve Figgis‘ ghoulish paintings, which you might have spotted at Simone Rocha’s latest show.
And as we wandered through the expo’s spaces, it became clear to us– the impact of makeup in fashion and everyday life is undeniable. Once viewed with suspicion, it has evolved into an essential part of self-care and a powerful tool for self-expression. Needless to say it’s time to channel your inner Lara Violetta, do you best avant-garde makeup look, and head to MoMu. On show from now till February 2nd, this is an exhibition you definitely won’t want to miss!
