Anthea Hamilton's Mash Up Exhibition

Anthea Hamilton is currently showing her first major survey exhibition, Mash Up, at the Museum of Contemporary Art Antwerp. Hamilton is cross-disciplinary in nature, working with media that ranges from sculpture to film to performance. From her unique practice, she explores the fragmented world around us evoking the humour in it all within surprising visual and spatial combinations. In doing so, Hamilton offers alternatives to society’s strict social codes, where imagination is key as she encourages viewers to rethink their understanding of ‘reality.’ Using French writer and dramatist Antonin Artaud’s notion of the ‘physical knowledge of images’ as inspiration, Hamilton’s overall goal is to produce a physical response from the audience to her art.

Upon visiting Mash Up, you are presented with 70 pieces – some old, some new. In the Hamilton cross-disciplinary spirit, she also celebrates alongside the other artists she has collaborated with in the past such as LOEWE (who is also the primary supporter of the event). By combining all of her work together, the exhibition not only exemplifies her current style but also further establishes her creative voice. Simply breath-taking and undeniably engaging with the viewer, a highlight of ours is The Squash costume and its dramatic posing in images.
